Who is eligible for a work permit?

Candidates who qualify to apply for a work permit must also meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Demonstrate their intent to leave once their work authorization expires; and
  • Prove they have sufficient funds to support them and their family in Canada and to return home; and
  • Are not criminally or medically inadmissible to Canada; and
  • Plan to work with an eligible employer; and
  • Can provide any requested documents that may prove their eligibility to enter Canada.

Here are some of the requirements you will need to get a work visa in Canada:

  • You will need to get a job offer from an employer in Canada for you to qualify for a work permit
  • You will have to ask your employer for an LMIA especially if you are applying for an employer-specific work permit and you will submit a copy with your work permit application
  • All applications must be submitted online through the website of the Canadian Government.

Who can apply for a Work Permit?

To be able to apply for a work permit, you have to fall under one of the following categories:

  • An international student willing and ready to work for 20 hours a week
  • A spouse or common-law partner of an applicant of the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program and also an international student
  • A dependent family member that has already applied for permanent residence in Canada.
