There are two ways to apply for a Japanese Government Scholarship: by applying to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science, and Technology (MEXT) with a recommendation from a Japanese embassy or other Japanese diplomatic mission in your country, or by applying directly to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science.

1. Mext Scholarship

The Mext scholarship is the first fully-funded scholarship for international students on this list. This fellowship is available for undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, and post-doctoral studies. MEXT scholarships cover tuition, housing, a monthly living allowance, and round-trip flights from your home country to Japan.

Under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships Program, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) of Japan grants scholarships to international students who intend to study at Japanese institutions as undergraduate or research (master / PhD) students.

Normally, the MEXT Japanese Government Scholarship application cycle is announced in April. This scholarship does not need knowledge of the Japanese language or IELTS/TOEFL.

  • For Teacher training students: You must be under 35 years of age and a graduate of a college or teacher training college.
  • You must have at least five years of active experience as a teacher in a primary, secondary or teacher training college in your country.
  • For Japanese Study Students: Applicants must be from 18 to 30 years old. Applicants must be enrolled as undergraduate students in faculties or schools that major in Japanese language or Japanese culture in a university outside Japan at the time when they come to Japan and must be enrolled in the home institution at the time when they return to their home countries.

2. Asian Development Bank Japan Scholarships

The ADB–Japan Scholarship Program (ADB–JSP) enrols about 300 students annually in academic institutions located in 9 countries within the Region. Upon completion of their study programs, scholars are expected to contribute to the economic and social development of their home countries.

  • not hold dual citizenship of any developed country;
  • have gained admission to an approved master’s course at a Designated Institution.
  • hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent with a superior academic record;
  • have at least two (2) years of full-time professional working experience (acquired after a university degree) at the time of application.
  • The candidate must have proficiency in oral and written English communication skills to be able to pursue studies;
  • not be more than 35 years old at the time of application, unless waived in exceptional cases with the expressed endorsement of the Government of Japan;
  • be in good health;
  • agree to return and work in his/her home country for at least two (2) years after completion of studies under the Program to contribute to its development;

Joint Japan World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program 2024-2025 is a fully funded master’s scholarship for international students.  JJ/WBGSP scholarship will cover the full tuition fee, accommodation, economy class air travel and monthly living stipend.

WBGSP is open to women and men from developing nations with relevant professional experience and a history of contributing to their countries’ development efforts who are applying to a master’s degree program in a development-related topic.

JJWBGSP offers scholarships for 26 Participating Programs at universities in the U.S., Europe, Africa, Oceania and Japan in key areas of development, including economic policy management, tax policy, and infrastructure management.

You are not eligible for a JJWBGSP Scholarship if you are not admitted to one of these programs. Developing nation students are committed to moving to their home country to use their fresh abilities and add to the cultural and economic development of their nations after graduating.

Economy class air travel between your home country and the host university at the start of your study program and immediately following the end of the scholarship period. In addition to the two-way air travel, scholars will receive a US $500 travel allowance for each trip;

Tuition for your graduate program and the cost of basic medical insurance obtained through the university.
While on campus during the scholarship period, a monthly subsistence allowance to cover all living expenses (accommodations, food, etc., including books). The amount of the allowance varies depending on the host country.

  • On or before the Scholarship Application Deadline date, be admitted unconditionally (except for funding) for the upcoming academic year to at least one of the JJ/WBGSP preferred university master’s programs located outside of the applicant’s country of citizenship and country of residence listed at the time the call for scholarship applications open. The letter of admission must be uploaded before submitting your application.
  • Not be an Executive Director, his/her alternate, and/or staff of any type of appointment of the World Bank Group or a close relative of the aforementioned by blood or adoption with the term “close relative” defined as Mother, Father, Sister, Half-sister, Brother, Half-brother, Son, Daughter, Aunt, Uncle, Niece, or Nephew; *Please note: All eligibility criteria are strictly adhered to. No exceptions are made. Eligibility criteria WILL NOT change during an open call for applications. 6. NAIST International Scholar Program

Under this program, NAIST provides basic financial support (hereafter referred to as “the NAIST International Scholarship”) to privately financed international students (international students who are not financed by the Japanese or a foreign government) with high academic ability and ambition.

The NAIST International Scholar Program allows the recipients to concentrate on education and research activities to promote the globalization of education/research at the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (hereafter referred to as “NAIST”).
