Brief Description:

The Human Rights and Democratization in Africa (HRDA) LLM/MPhil is an unique one-year intensive program in which 25-30 outstanding individuals spend six months in Pretoria and six months at one of the 12 partner universities around Africa. They are taught by famous human rights lecturers and participate in numerous practical training exercises. It is Africa’s only course of its kind. Graduates join the HRDA Alumni Association, which has 537 members working in a wide range of human rights organizations, from the grassroot, through the civil service, to international institutions such as the African Union and the United Nations Individuals from all African countries are welcome to apply for admission to the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, South Africa, to pursue a Master’s degree (LLM/MPhil) in Human Rights and Democratization in Africa..

Full-scholarships covering at least tuition, housing, and official program activities will be provided depending on funding availability.

Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must be African nationals with a first-degree in law (LLB, license en droit, or licenciatura em direito) or an Honors degree in a field related to human rights and democratization.

Applicants must have a shown professional, intellectual, and personal interest in and dedication to human rights and democratization in Africa, as well as a strong likelihood of using the certification in their future professions, preferably in their home country. They must have a strong academic background. Women, as well as members of minority groups such as indigenous peoples, LGBTI people, and disabled people, are urged to apply.

Requirements:

  • Law students
    A degree allowing access to the legal profession (e.g. LLB or licence en droit)
  • Other students (non-law students)
    An Honors degree in a discipline relevant to human rights and democratization
  • a demonstrated professional, academic and personal interest in and commitment to human rights and democratization in Africa.
  • an indication that the applicant would be likely to put the qualification to good use in his or her future career, preferably in his or her country of origin (the ‘multiplier effect’);
  • geographic representation(in the sense that an overrepresentation of students from a particular African country will be avoided, given the pan-African scope and ambitions of the program);
  • gender representation (in the sense that an equitable balance between women and men is sought);

Application Procedures:

  • Individuals from all African countries are invited to apply for admission to study for the Master’s Degree (LLM/MPhil) in Human Rights and Democratization in Africa at the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, South Africa.
  • Applicants must be in possession of the first degree in Law (LLB, licence en droit or licenciatura em direito) or an Honors degree relevant to human rights and democratization.
  • All documents uploaded must be typewritten.
  • The following documents will be requested during your application:
    • Previous academic records/transcripts
    • Previous degree certificate(s)
    • Copy of bio-data page of passport
    • A good quality photograph of yourself
    • For applicants who did not obtain their qualifications in English: TOEFL, SAT1 or IELTS Test certificate.
