Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarships, funded by the Australian government and valued at up to $124,000, the Research Training Program (RTP) scholarships provide a tuition fee offset and a living-costs stipend to high quality international postgraduate students.

Australian Government Research Training Programme (RTP) Scholarships for International Students includes both master’s and doctorate level, and it is awarded to local and international students. The scholarship captures the tuition fee as well as allowance to cover living costs and stipends for expenses involved in carrying out research.

The Australian Government RTP provides grants, on annual basis, to higher education providers (HEPs) to support both local and international students undertaking Research Doctorate and Research Masters degrees. These are regarded as higher degrees by research (HDRs).

The Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarship with the handsome stipend is funded by the Commonwealth Department of Education and Training. This department supports different universities to facilitate domestic and international students undertaking Higher Degree Research programs to improve their research skills in the internationally organized environment.

The benefits of the scholarship depends on the Policy that  Commonwealth Government funding provides to the each university to support Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarships, so the stipends depend on the institution you have chosen to undertake your research.

This is to say that the RTP stipends varies, while the RTP stipends for the university of Sydney is valued at $35,950 per annum (indexed annually), the RTP stipend for Australian National University is valued at $28,854 and so on.

However, the RTP International Scholarship provides a stipend to assist with living costs and overseas health cover as well as tuition fees offsets (i.e. no tuition fees are applicable).

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must have enrolled as international postgraduate research student.
  • Have an outstanding record of academic achievement and research potential.
  • Applicants must be an international student at the time of award.
  • Applicants must apply to be considered for RTP Scholarships at the time of their application for admission to their HDR Course and must submit the required supporting material in the manner specified on the Scholarships Office website.
  • Applicants who have already commenced their HDR candidature must apply by completing the application form available on the Scholarships Office website.

Application:

Apply deadlines also varies yearly, RTP scholarships are usually awarded in February and November. Therefore, you must submit all required documentation for your admission application, and Research Experience evidence (if applicable) to be considered in the relevant award timeline.

Note that you may be notified of your RTP scholarship outcome at a different time to receiving your offer of study.

RTP scholarships are based on academic merit and are highly competitive. You will generally need to have an outstanding academic record, and any research publications will also be highly regarded.
